South Football Star: Nostalgia and Excitement "I have a vision that there will be crowds once again in excess of 4,000 fans. " That is what Phil Westfall, member of the first-ever graduating class of Springfield South High School, envisions for the future of Springfield High School football. Westfall served as captain of the football team both his junior year (1959 season), the last year of Springfield High School, and his senior year (1960 season), the first year for Springfield South High School. A Springfield South High Hall of Fame inductee in 1999, Westfall remembers praying with the team before hitting the field for every game, and when he returned to the field on Friday, September 21st for the football players' reunion at Evans Stadium, he said it was as though it was just yesterday that he was a Wildcat, "getting my ankles taped for the Friday night game." A former 1st Team Greater Ohio Conference and Associated Press 1st Team All Ohio quarterback, among many other honors, Westfall joined about 60 other former players to line up and walk across the field one last time. He said that "walking across the field on Friday night brought tears to my eyes. It was exceptionally nostalgic."
Athletic Director Greg Newland called the event a "big success" and said that he has had many alumni contact him about returning for both the last homecoming game, which will take place on October 12th, and the last North versus South game that will take place on October 27th. Newland also said that the boosters have been selling the old football jerseys from South's past teams, which has been of interest to many alumni , and jerseys will be available at the final homecoming game for South High. Westfall has his old jersey (#20) hanging on his basement wall, and it serves as a reminder of very special memories.

Joining of Generations: North High Alumni Perform with Student Band Homecoming: cooling fall weather, alumni returning to cheer on their alma mater, and the marching band blaring the fight song. North High School’s band will be a bit larger this year, though. Alumni will join with current band members to play at the Homecoming football game on October 12. “We’re just trying to have fun and have a good time,” said current band director Russ Hoagland about this year’s special band. Hoagland has been the band director at North for four years and with Springfield schools for twenty. This year seemed to be the best time to put together an alumni band, since it’s North’s last year, explained Hoagland. Dianna Russell, a North alum, suggested the idea and has headed up the effort to put the band together. She’s rounded up almost 50 alumni so far. About half are graduates from the past three or four years, but some haven’t played in over 40.
